Toffee apples

Toffee apples

Making toffee apples is a simple pleasure that can bring back fond childhood memories or create new ones with friends and family. They’re perfect for autumn celebrations such as Halloween or Bonfire Night, adding a festive touch to any occasion.

Ingredients:

  • 8 Granny Smith apples
  • 400g golden caster sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vinegar
  • 4 tbsp golden syrup

Method:

Wash and dry the Granny Smith apples thoroughly. Remove the stems and insert a wooden stick into the top of each apple.

Prepare a baking tray by lining it with baking paper.

Combine the golden caster sugar, vinegar and golden syrup in a saucepan over a medium heat. Stir until the sugar has dissolved and the mixture is smooth.

Increase the heat and bring to the boil. Cook without stirring until the toffee reaches the hard crack stage, which is 150°C on a candy thermometer. If you don’t have a thermometer, you can test it by dropping some toffee into cold water. It should harden immediately and, when removed, be brittle and easy to break.

When the toffee is ready, quickly dip each apple into the hot toffee, tilting the pan to cover all sides. Allow any excess to drip off before placing the apples on the prepared baking tray.

Be careful as the toffee will be very hot. If the toffee starts to thicken, you can gently heat it up again to thin it.

Allow the toffee to cool and set before serving.
