Yeast Star with Poppy Seed Filling

Yeast Star

A yeast poppy seed cake shaped like a star. Surprise your guests with this original idea for a delicious cake.

Ingredients:

  • flour: 500 g
  • fresh yeast: 30 g
  • sugar: 50 g
  • milk: 180 ml
  • eggs: 2
  • butter: 50 g

Additionally:

  • egg for brushing the dough: 1
  • ready-made poppy seed filling from a can: 300 g
  • icing: hot lemon juice (1 tablespoon) + powdered sugar (about 1/2 cup)

Preparation:

Pour the flour into a bowl, make a well in the center, crumble the yeast into it, and sprinkle with sugar. Gradually pour warm milk into the well, mixing it with the yeast and incorporating a few tablespoons of flour. Cover with a cloth and set aside for 10 minutes to rise.

Add the eggs and gently start mixing all the ingredients with a spoon. Once roughly combined, add melted warm butter and begin kneading the dough. Knead for about 10-15 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic. Cover and set aside for about 45 minutes to rise.

Turn the dough out onto a floured board and knead briefly. Form into a ball and divide into 4 parts. Knead the first piece of dough briefly, then roll it out into a circle about 25 cm in diameter. Place it on a large baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Spread 1/3 of the poppy seed filling, leaving about a 1 cm border.

Knead and roll out the second piece of dough and place it on the first layer. Spread with poppy seed filling and place the third layer of dough. Spread the remaining filling and cover with the last layer of dough.

Cut the dough into 16 parts, not cutting all the way to the center (leave the center uncut). Twist each piece twice, alternating pairs, meaning twist one piece twice to the right and the neighboring piece twice to the left. Seal the ends of each pair together. Set aside for about 20 minutes to rise.

Preheat the oven to 180°C. Gently brush the top with beaten egg and place in the preheated oven. Bake for about 25 minutes until golden. Remove from the oven and after slightly cooling, drizzle with icing (mix hot lemon juice with powdered sugar gradually until you get the right consistency).
