The recipe uses a simple cake mix, making it accessible to everyone, regardless of baking experience. You can personalise the cake with your favourite colours and decorations to make it as unique as the birthday person. Decorating the cake can be a fun activity for the whole family, especially if you have children who would love to help create the caterpillar’s face and segments.
Ingredients:
- 1 (18.25 ounce) package yellow cake mix
- 1 (16 ounce) package vanilla or coloured frosting
- ½ cup shredded coconut
Method:
Prepare the cake mix according to package instructions for a 9×13 inch cake. Once baked, allow the cake to cool completely.
Cut the cake into oval or round segments to make the body of the caterpillar. You can use a cookie cutter or a knife to shape the segments.
Arrange the segments on a serving platter, connecting them end to end in a wavy line to mimic the shape of a caterpillar.
Frost the cake with vanilla or coloured icing. Use a spatula to smooth out the frosting or create a texture that resembles the body of a caterpillar.
Decorate with coconut by sprinkling coconut shavings over the frosted cake to add texture. If you like, you can colour the coconut with food colouring to match the icing.
Add details such as eyes, mouths and antennae using sweets, fruit slices or extra icing piped into the moulds.
Chill the cake in the fridge to allow the icing to set before serving.
