Homemade soft pretzels are a classic snack that’s fun to make and delicious to eat. The recipe provided is a great place to start making these chewy, golden-brown treats. Here’s a step-by-step guide to making your own soft pretzels:
Ingredients:
- 500g strong white bread flour
- 7g sachet instant dried yeast
- 25g dark brown muscovado sugar
- 50g unsalted butter, melted
- plain flour, for dusting
- oil, for greasing
- 3 tbsp bicarbonate of soda, baked
- 1 large egg, lightly beaten, to glaze
- flaked sea salt, to serve
Method:
In a large mixing bowl, combine the bread flour, yeast, muscovado sugar and a pinch of salt.
Stir in the melted butter and gradually add the warm water until you have a dough.
Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth and elastic, about 5-10 minutes.
Put the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth and leave to rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
Preheat the oven to 200°C.
Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and roll each piece into a long rope.
Twist the ropes into pretzel shapes and place on a greased baking tray.
Dissolve the baking soda in a large pan of boiling water.
Boil each pretzel for 30 seconds, then remove with a slotted spoon and return to the baking tray.
Brush the pretzels with the beaten egg and sprinkle with sea salt.
Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
Allow the pretzels to cool slightly on a wire rack before serving.
