Ingredients:
- 1 cup all purpose flour
- 1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon shortening
- 1/3 cup warm water
- Oil for frying
- Optional: Powdered sugar and honey
Method:
Sift the flour, baking powder and salt into a large bowl1.
Cut in the shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs1.
Gradually stir in the warm water until the dough just holds together1.
Divide the dough into 5 pieces1.
Roll each piece into a thin circle.
Cut into triangles or squares.
Heat the oil in a deep fryer or large saucepan to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
Fry the dough pieces until puffed and golden brown, about 30 seconds per side2.
Drain on kitchen paper and dust with icing sugar and drizzle with honey if desired.
